Content Objects

Presently, I am a Dyslexia teacher, and I work with students in all grades K-5. Although I have a specific program that I must follow for the required Dyslexia hours, there are activities that could be done that would support skills that are taught. One major area we have been working on lately is compound words, so for my techplay I am going to focus on content tools that could be used to support reading and writing, with a focus on using compound words.  Content Objects: NoRedInk NoRedInk is both a website and a mobile tool that allows students to complete practice and quizzes over grammar, sentence structure, spelling, and other mechanics. The results are sent to teachers and students are provided feedback so that they can see what areas they need to continue to improve on for mastery. I enjoy NoRedInk as a tool to review concepts taught in class, but a con for the students is that they cannot go on until they have a certain of problems correct. While the website offers writing ...

Creativity Tools

Creativity tools are an excellent resource for teachers in the classroom. They provide the ability for students to be creative when showing their content knowledge. Some creativity tools I explored include: iMovie, Prezi, and Flipgrid.      iMovie allows for students to upload a video that they recorded. They could use a variety of tools to record the video: phone, tablet, or camera. Once they upload their video into iMovie, students can edit the video using a variety of tools. Students can edit the video to add in additional screens, such as a photograph or a text screen. This would be a great tool to use for students to create a trailer for a book, to create a video of the students completing a drama unit by creating a video of a performance, or creating a video reenacting an important scenario from history.      Prezi allows students to create a presentation that can zoom around to various content that students created. This gives t...

ePortfolios

Folio thinking is a process of engaging in the collection, organization, reflection and connection that allows for a person to dive deep into understanding about one’s learning experiences, what they mean, and how the artifacts relate to one another. While assessments, such as quizzes and tests, can provide quick feedback to a teacher to see if their students are understanding the topics that were covered in class, they do not provide the reflective abilities of a portfolio. Portfolios not only show a students ability to create materials and show a deeper level of understanding for a topic, but it also allows for the student to reflect on their learning and to think critically about what they have learned and how it has affected them personally.  Personally, being able to articulate what I have learned and providing evidence of that learning with a collection of artifacts would be more meaningful to me as a learner than being told what specifically to do every step of the way as it...

Blogs

A blog is a website that is formatted similarly to a journal where a person or group of people can share information or ideas with others. The blog owner is the main author on the blog that is sharing their thoughts or ideas. Each post will be about a different topic or idea. You can use different tags to sort posts by different topics. I have read a variety of different blogs and use them to help me learn new information that I may not have previously known or to read  about a topic in another person's perspective.  Blogs are also a tool that can be used in education as they allow for students to respond to questions or topics from class, and they can provide a way for students to think critically about a specific learning task and share their understanding. When I was researching various blogs, I have previously tested out Weebly and Wix and was quickly reminded that I did not find them user-friendly as some aspects are hard to understand, especially if intending to use them...
